02 / About

A full-service, privately owned lab — serving the Hudson Valley since 1982.

Environmental Labworks, Inc. is a full-service, privately owned laboratory providing analysis of water and wastewater for contaminants as defined by the US EPA.

Started by Tony Falco in 1982, Environmental Labworks has seen continuous growth throughout four decades. Under his leadership, the laboratory outgrew its space and in 2008 moved to its current location on Route 9W in Marlboro, NY.

"Tony was both a visionary and a renaissance man. He often thought 'outside of the box' to come up with innovative and creative solutions. We continue to maintain the high standard of service that the clients of Environmental Labworks have come to expect."

Our Laboratory Director and Quality Assurance Officer Mike Lupi joined our staff in 1992. His tenure gives clients invaluable technical support on regulatory programs, project planning and data interpretation. Environmental Labworks is a NELAP accredited laboratory in the state of New York.

Environmental Labworks is a great lab. The staff is knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. My test results were emailed to me the next day. I highly recommend them. — Carol F., Hudson Valley homeowner
03 / Process

Clean sample in. Certified answer out.

Straight from our FAQ: here's how a bacteria sample travels from your faucet to the final report.

Pick up a bottle

Obtain a sterile 100 mL bottle from Environmental Labworks. Remove any filter or screen from your faucet tap.

Disinfect & flush

Flame the tap or pour boiling water over it, then run cold water for at least five full minutes.

Fill & seal

Fill the bottle to the 100 mL line without touching the inside of the cap or bottle. Don't let the faucet contact the rim.

Deliver on ice

Deliver to the lab on ice within 24 hours. Can't make it right away? Refrigerate until you're ready to transport.

05 / Meet the team

Proud and professional. Also, kind of hilarious.

A veteran team with degrees in the relevant disciplines and several licensed operators on staff.

Laboratory Director Mike Lupi

Over three decades in water quality. A Poseidon of potable purity who probably dreams in parts per million. The reason you can confidently gulp down that glass of tap water.

Technical Director Julian Falco

A visionary like his father Tony — with the exception that Julian's vision involves training primates to work for us. Bridging the gap between species, one coliform panel at a time.

Project Manager Trudie

Laser-like focus on the nitty-gritty details. We'd trust her to find a misplaced comma in a ten-thousand-page report. Possibly calibrates our coffee maker in secret.

Laboratory Technician Dante

Loves water. Swimming in the big blue ocean, splashy-splashing in the bathtub, even just watching the little raindrops fall down, down, down. A very splashy and happy friend.

Laboratory Technician Jenn(ybean)

Mother of three fur babies — Sunny the bunny, and cats Chicken & Goose. If she were a pasta shape she'd be gnocchi: "I, too, am full of potatoes (at all times)."

Laboratory Technician Lauren, Natalie, Caitlynn

A passion for environmental sustainability, a descendant of Leif Erikson, and a former princess who can break concrete bricks with her bare hands. Our team of superstars.

06 / FAQ

Questions we answer most.

If you don't see your question answered here, please contact us — there are no stupid water questions.

Can you test my water for "everything"?
We offer a very comprehensive package for homeowners through a partner laboratory. It includes Heavy Metals, Inorganic Chemicals, Physical factors, Volatile Organic Chemicals, Pesticides, Herbicides and PCBs. Note that this homeowners package is an informational screening package and may not be used for regulatory compliance.
What should I test my well water for?
The New York State Department of Health recommends testing each year for E. coli & coliform bacteria. In addition, every 3–5 years test for Lead, Nitrate, Nitrite, Arsenic, Sodium, Iron, Manganese, Turbidity, pH, Hardness and Alkalinity.
I'm buying or selling a house. What do I need to test for?
In most cases, you will need a test for E. coli & coliform bacteria. FHA or VA loans may require additional tests — contact the lender directly. The Towns of Fishkill, East Fishkill and Wappinger Falls have additional mandated testing requirements.
How do I collect a bacteria sample?
Pick up a sterile 100 mL bottle from Environmental Labworks, remove filters or screens from your tap, disinfect the faucet, run cold water for five minutes, fill to the line without touching the cap or bottle interior, and deliver on ice within 24 hours.
Can you give me a count of coliform in my drinking water?
Coliform in drinking water is only certified by the New York State Department of Health as a "Presence / Absence" analysis. No further useful information related to health is gained by having a number.
Can you mail me bottles or can I mail you samples?
Not at this time. Many of the required preservatives are classified as HAZMATs, so we do not ship containers out. To meet holding-time limits, samples must be hand-delivered to our laboratory.
Can you test this spring water to see if it's safe to drink?
Short answer: no. Per the NYSDOH, drinking water is used for more than beverages — ice cubes, baby formula, washing produce, brushing teeth. Testing untreated spring water for safety is not something we can certify.
When can I expect my results?
Coliform results are typically emailed by the end of the next business day. Most other tests run in the 2–3 week range. We respectfully ask that you not call inquiring about results — you'll have them as soon as they're available.
